PEG-NL Environment Award

SEM was selected for this award in 2013  through a competitive nomination process carried out by PEG-NL.

The award acknowledges the innovative work carried out by SEM to develop a safe and efficient system for providing access across ice in Nortthern Labrador.

Inuit from Nain and other North Coast communities rely on landfast ice for travel throughout the winter months.  Shipping of nickel concentrate from the Voisey’s Bay Mine and Mill requires that large concentrate-carrying icebreaker  vessels transit this ice regularly throughout  the ice-covered season.  A pontoon system was conceived by SEM, and over the past five years, designed, tested and made operational such that safe passage across the ship’s track is assured.

At a ceremony held during the June 2013 PEG-NL Annual General Meeting, Everett Fancey, Engineering Manager with SEM accepted the award on behalf of the company.
